Chiltern Railways expecting ‘near-normal’ service on EWR strike days

The RMT announced last week it would be striking on October 10 and October 17 for 24 hours.

The strike action is over the dispute over staffing on the new East West Rail line.

But the Department for Transport said Chiltern, which returned to public ownership last month, had ‘run most of its network for decades with the driver in full control of the doors’.

No trains will run between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa all day, and four long-distance services to or from Stourbridge Junction will be cut back to Banbury or Birmingham Moor Street.

Trains will still call frequently at Wembley Stadium on October 10.

Chiltern Railways has confirmed that more than 93 per cent of services will operate on Saturday, October 10.

Tony Baxter, Interim Managing Director of Chiltern Railways, said of the strike action: “We’re disappointed that RMT members have voted in favour of industrial action over how we intend to run services on the first stage of East West Rail between Oxford and Milton Keynes.

“Industrial action has been announced by the RMT on 10 and 17 October; we expect to operate the vast majority of our services, limiting the impact on customers. We will confirm timetables for these days shortly.

“We have run most of our trains with the Driver in control of the doors for decades, safely and as approved by the independent rail regulator. It also means over 100 new permanent jobs at Chiltern, and no changes to the roles of existing colleagues.”
