Waitrose Witney, which first opened in 1986, built on the site of the former Woolgate Centre, reached the milestone on Wednesday, September 16.
Shoppers were invited to join in the festivities, with the first 40 customers receiving gift bags filled with No.1 Prosecco, chocolates and crackers from the Waitrose No.1 range.
A Wheel of Fortune offered additional prizes throughout the store, and visitors could enter a draw to win a hamper.
Xen Tzambazles, branch manager, said: “It’s quite a remarkable achievement that it has been 40 years since we first opened our doors.
“Today has been about celebrating our loyal shoppers who have become familiar friends over the years, and to honor the incredible Partners who bring so much joy to these aisles and the local community every single day.”
Photographs of different Waitrose uniforms throughout the years were displayed in store, along with highlights from its original construction through to recent refurbishments.
The current Witney branch replaced an earlier Waitrose store that had served the town since 1969.
A private gathering was also held for current and former partners, each of whom received a commemorative gift.
Among those recognised was Kevin Wise, who has spent 46 years with the John Lewis Partnership, including 36 years at the Witney store.
Jayne Richie, who began her career at the original Witney branch, also marked 40 years of service.
Luke Viner, another long-serving partner, joined the store 24 years ago and met his wife Tasha while working there.
