Popular cafe owners bid farewell after four successful years

The Fat Zebra in Market Square, Bicester, which describes itself as offering coffee, cocktails, a great atmosphere and healthy, inspiring food, opened in April 2022.

In May, the premises were listed for sale by Blacks Brokers, with an asking price for the leasehold of the premises set at £75,000.

Despite a reported annual turnover of nearly £297,700 and a gross profit of more than £200,000, owners Rose and Johnny noted that “business has been a bit slow” and it had to close while they tried to restructure their position.

In a statement published on its Facebook page on October 7, the owners said: “To our dear valued customers. Unfortunately, we are unable to keep the Zebra alive.

“We are so thank you all for all your support over the last four years. It was an amazing time and experience made so much better by meeting you all.”

It said its Facebook page will officially close at the end of the month.

They added: “We would like to wish the new tenants the very best.”

Residents have flooded their page with support as the couple leave the high street.

One said: “You should both be proud of yourselves for what you achieved at the Fat Zebra. Johnny, you were the heart and soul of it all and worked so hard- it is wonderful to see so many positive comments of support. You have set the bar very high for the next tenants to follow.”
