UK retail giant recalls products over asbestos fears

The retailer has withdrawn two seasonal gonk doorstop products after sand sealed inside the items may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.

Customers who have bought the items have been advised to stop using the products immediately and keep them out of reach of children.

The contaminated items are described as gonks with a pumpkin hat and a witch hat with grey hair.

The Witch Mini Gonk doorstop carries model number 991174794 and barcode 212047125, while the Pumpkin Gonk doorstop has model number 991179148 and barcode 212080261.

Customers must dispose of the items carefully and have been advised to wear gloves and masks for safety.

If the items have split or sand has spilled, customers should clean-up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust and wear gloves and a mask.

The Office for Product Safety & Standards said: “Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.”

As a result, the item does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Customers are urged to follow the disposal instructions and can visit Primark’s support page for additional guidance.

This is not the first asbestos-related product recall in recent months.

Over 35 Dunelm novelty seasonal doorstops were recalled this year for containing quantities of asbestos.

Many children’s toys have also been recalled in the past year over risks to health owing to asbestos contamination.
