19th-century Oxfordshire pub reopens under new name

The Duck, on Duke Street in Henley, reopened on Thursday after closing suddenly in September 2025.

It is not the first time the venue has had a name change, with the original pub named the Beer Tree closing in October 2013.

The pub was then converted into a Mexican restaurant, Pachangas, which was opened from April 2014 until it’s closure in 2023.

New owners then converted it back to a pub calling it The Duke in January 2025, before its sudden closure in September 2025.

The building is Grade-II listed and is believed to have been built in the early 19th-century, according to CAMRA.

The new venture is part of the new group Symposium Pubs, led by former Rosa’s Thai operations head Jonny Bramwell.

In an Instagram post, Mr Bramwell described the project as “maybe the worst kept secret ever,” adding that after he took on The Three Horseshoes in the town’s Reading Road in May, the team is now preparing to launch The Duck, just a short walk away.

Speaking to the Morning Advertiser ahead of the reopening, Mr Bramwell explained that the new offer will move away from a high?end, restaurant?led approach and instead position itself as an accessible, premium high?street pub.

While some drinkers may wonder if The Duck is a less historic name than The Duke, the pub’s new name actually references the street’s former name, Duck Street.
