Bake Off star Nigella Lawson praised for ‘naughty’ comment

The celebrity chef, who studied at Oxford University and joined the programme as a judge this year, challenged fellow judge Paul Hollywood during Biscuit Week when he described one baker’s cookies as “naughty”.

“I don’t approve of referring to food as naughty,” Lawson replied. “We have to take our pleasures where we can in life.”

The brief exchange quickly resonated with viewers, many of whom praised Lawson’s approach to food and eating.

Social media users applauded her for pushing back against language that can attach guilt to certain foods.

Others said it was refreshing to see a high-profile chef openly embracing enjoyment of food, as seen in her non-shy mouthfuls of food.

The moment came during an episode in which Lawson’s judging style once again attracted attention from fans.

Ms Lawson’s stance has drawn particular praise from experts at a time when discussions around dieting, weight loss medications and restrictive eating habits remain prominent online.

Psychotherapist and author Eloise Skinner told Food Bible that avoiding labels such as “good”, “bad” or “naughty” can help people develop a healthier relationship with food.

She said challenging the idea that foods carry moral value can reduce feelings of shame and discourage negative habits or thought patterns around eating.

Writing in i, television editor Emily Baker described Ms Lawson’s intervention as “a much needed breath of fresh air”, arguing that it challenged the idea that enjoying biscuits or other sweet treats should come with feelings of guilt.
