Crane Garden Buildings celebrates 50 years of manufacturing

Crane Garden Buildings, which has a show site in Burford Garden Company in Oxfordshire, is celebrating its long heritage as part of National Manufacturing Day.

The business has been handcrafting timber garden buildings in Norfolk for over five decades, and every structure sold through its show sites is made to order at its Norfolk workshop.

Nick Crane, partner at Crane Garden Buildings, said: “National Manufacturing Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the enormous amount of skill that still exists within British manufacturing.

“At Crane, we’ve been making garden buildings in Norfolk for more than 50 years, and while the technology and equipment available to us has developed enormously during that time, craftsmanship remains at the heart of what we do.

“Our recent investment is a good example of the two working together.”

National Manufacturing Day, organised by Make UK, is an annual event designed to showcase UK manufacturing and highlight the skilled careers available within the sector.

This year’s event comes as Crane Garden Buildings invests in its manufacturing capabilities with the recent installation of a state-of-the-art planer and moulder at its Norfolk facility.

The new equipment allows the company to carry out timber planing and moulding in-house for the first time, a process previously outsourced.

The investment, part-funded by Norfolk County Council through the Business Growth Fund, is expected to create at least two new jobs.

Mr Crane said: “By bringing a process we previously outsourced into our own workshop, we’re giving our team even greater control over the timber we work with and developing those skills within the business.

“The new equipment gives us greater precision, but it is our team’s knowledge and experience that ultimately turns those materials into a finished building.

“When somebody visits one of our show sites, they’re seeing the end result, but behind every building is a whole team of people and a considerable amount of manufacturing expertise.

“National Manufacturing Day gives us a chance to celebrate them.”

Crane’s craftspeople have more than 375 years of combined experience, and each building is made to order before being delivered and installed at customers’ homes across the country.

The company also prioritises sustainability, using responsibly sourced timber, water-based paints, and repurposing or recycling more than 95 per cent of waste generated at its Norfolk workshop.

Customers can view Crane’s range of garden buildings at its show site in Burford Garden Company, Burford.
