Freddie van Mierlo wrote to Ken Murphy about the metallic shopping trolleys, bearing Tesco’s iconic blue with red accents branding.
The Henley and Thame MP collected and returned three of the trolleys to the supermarket on Reading Road, only to witness another being removed and taken back into town.
In his letter, dated September 8, he said: “Their presence, scattered around the town, is an eyesore in our otherwise beautiful and well-loved town.”
He says the efforts of volunteers, who help to maintain the appearance of the town, are “undermined when Tesco-liveried shopping carts are left on our streets”.
He added that the town’s economy, which relies significantly on tourism and retail, has been “negatively impacted by [the] poor appearance.”
He called on Mr Murphy to implement an automatic trolley locking scheme to prevent trolleys being removed from the site.
He added: “A small number of residents likely remove the trolleys for understandable reasons – for example, limited mobility – but ultimately should not be allowed to do so.”
Within the letter, Mr van Mierlo took the opportunity to thank the company for the work they do for the town, including providing funding for community projects and the collection of food bank items.
He added: “I am confident you will act swiftly to prevent the town from further littering by your property.”
It is not known if Mr van Mierlo has received a response yet.
