\n A Sutton Courtenay householder, who asked not to be named, said he has been enduring sewage invading his land and the surrounding footpaths for the past five years.\n<\/p>\n
\n This has now prompted the UK\u2019s largest water company to apologise.\n<\/p>\n
\n A spokesperson said: \u201cWe apologise to residents of Sutton Courtenay who have experienced sewer\u00a0flooding due\u00a0to water ingress that\u00a0has\u00a0been caused by the heavy rain the county experienced at the beginning of the year.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cSutton Courtenay is highly susceptible to sewer\u00a0flooding and\u00a0flooding in general due to a combination of\u00a0factors including\u00a0its\u00a0location\u00a0in a\u00a0low-lying\u00a0valley, extremely high groundwater levels and runoff which then contribute to hydraulic overload.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cFollowing reports of sewer flooding, our teams have historically\u00a0and continue\u00a0to attend\u00a0the area to investigate the source of the problem as soon as it\u00a0is\u00a0reported.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n This comes after the man said that when it rains he \u201calways gets foul smelling liquid spurting up through the manhole\u00a0cover which leaves raw sewage in the road and on the paths and in my drive\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
\n Villagers have also had a major discharge when it hadn\u2019t rained, and he said that locals often have to clean toilet paper and other objects from the village path.\n<\/p>\n
\n Speaking in March, he added: \u201cI regularly get raw sewage pouring out of the manhole cover polluting the footpaths and pouring into my property.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n The man claims the issues began five years ago when Thames Water connected some new houses to the sewage system outside his property.\n<\/p>\n
\n The road still bears the marks of Thames Water\u2019s work with the man calling it a \u201cnightmare\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
\n He added: \u201cThese shouldn\u2019t have been connected under this manhole cover as it also the point where a pump station connects.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cThey should have connected it elsewhere or spent the money to widen the sewage pipe.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThames Water state that there is nothing that can be done as it\u2019s just due to heavy rain.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cHowever it happens when it hasn\u2019t been raining and surely, it\u2019s not right that sewage should squirt up out of the manhole cover.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n Thames Water pointed out that development matters ultimately fall within the local authority\u2019s remit but said they were looking at a longer-term solution.\n<\/p>\n
\n The spokesperson added: \u201cFor the time being to mitigate flooding and\u00a0protect homes and\u00a0the\u00a0environment, the\u00a0village is currently on a\u00a0recurring\u00a0maintenance regime for sewer\u00a0cleaning.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cThis ensures our assets\u00a0remain\u00a0free of debris and other materials\u00a0so if any issues occur, they can be addressed\u00a0promptly.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cTo date, no blockages have been\u00a0identified. However, due to the complexity of the issue investigations will continue to\u00a0identify\u00a0a long-term solution.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
