\n\tKelly Klein \u2014 the ultimate \u201990s minimalist muse \u2014 is back at it with her friend Tony Melillo, who\u2019s created \u201cThe Kelly\u201d T-shirt for his ATM collection.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn true minimalist fashion, it\u2019s not a collection, but a single style, in white \u2014 a short-sleeve version of ATM\u2019s popular slub jersey destroyed wash T.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe offering will be promoted online with shots featuring Klein, both on her own and with Melillo, as well as a video where the longtime friends reminisce barefoot in faded jeans and, of course, white T-shirts.<\/p>\n

\n\tKlein recalled how she met Melillo. She was supposed to be having dinner with another friend, who couldn\u2019t make it in the end.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cHe didn\u2019t tell me he couldn\u2019t come,\u201d she said in the video. \u201cAnd he sent Tony instead. So a stranger showed up at the restaurant and the two of us had a nice dinner together, not knowing each other at all. And we immediately became friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tKlein has lived many lives in and around fashion, going to work for Calvin Klein in the 1980s, marrying the designer (with whom she remains friendly) and moving on to a career in photography.<\/p>\n
\n\tAbove all, it is a collaboration that came together naturally, Melillo told WWD.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt feels authentic,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the biggest point of doing something in general and, especially in my world, where T-shirts are so important. She\u2019s part of my brand, part of my life, so it just feels real.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tHaving just one version of The Kelly is fitting.<\/p>\n
\n\tEven Melillo, whose initials give the brand its name, only wears two ATM T-shirt styles.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t need to wear the whole collection,\u201d he said. \u201cI wear two.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tKlein had one preferred style, and now it\u2019s been updated and bears her name.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThat same T-shirt is her underpinning,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s her T-shirt to go to the gym. It\u2019s a T-shirt to go pick up whatever.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love the destroyed wash because on the hem of the T-shirt it has a very subtle destroyed wash,\u201d he said. \u201cSo the slub jersey is specific because it\u2019s something that we own and we\u2019ve created from scratch. And then the hem \u2014 it takes eight minutes to do this destroyed wash by each artisan.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThat hand touch, care and story are part of the appeal, he said.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s really going after a realness that brings us back into the foreground, versus just trying to throw clothes out at people,\u201d Melillo said. \u201cWe\u2019re really trying to push the relevance of not just being a brand, but bringing something that\u2019s culturally relevant amongst all ages and a community.\u201d<\/p>\n
