\n\tPARIS \u2014 Art Basel Paris has cut short its 2026 edition due to the threat of violent protests in Paris this weekend.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn an email to registered guests, the fair said it would open to the public for just one day, Friday, after three days of preview events. It will not open on Saturday and Sunday, as initially planned.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe are writing to inform you that, in light of potential demonstrations across Paris this weekend, and in the interest of safeguarding our visitors, exhibitors, partners, staff and artworks, Art Basel Paris will conclude its 2026 edition at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23,\u201d organizers said.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe deeply regret that we will not be able to welcome you over the weekend and recognize the disruption this may cause to your plans. This decision has not been taken lightly, and the safety of everyone involved in the fair remains our utmost priority,\u201d Art Basel added.<\/p>\n
\n\tDefying security concerns following a weekend of riots in France, the aisles of the fair, held at the Grand Palais, were packed during the preview sessions, which kicked off with a four-hour Avant-Premi\u00e8re window on Tuesday that drew guests including LVMH Mo\u00ebt Hennessy Louis Vuitton boss Bernard Arnault, Katie Holmes and Natalie Portman.<\/p>\n
\n\tRecognizing the fair\u2019s growing status, galleries came equipped with significant works, including a 1917 Amedeo Modigliani nude which the Pace Di Donna Schrader Galleries was offering for upward of $100 million.<\/p>\n
\n\tAmong major sales, Hauser & Wirth reported Gerhard Richter\u2019s \u201cRococo Table\u201d and Georg Baselitz\u2019s \u201cThe Shepherd\u201d went for around $10 million each on the opening day.<\/p>\n
\n\tLouis Vuitton, an associate partner of Art Basel Paris, celebrated its history of collaborations with an exhibition of Capucines bags customized by 14 artists, alongside the original works that inspired them.<\/p>\n
\n\tBut the prospect of another weekend of potentially violent protests and looting in the French capital has police officials on high alert, with stringent security expected around the Grand Palais, which is located near strategically sensitive buildings such as the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace.<\/p>\n
\n\tArt Basel organisers had sought to reassure VIP guests in an email on the Sunday before the show, saying additional security measures had been put in place following the unrest nationwide.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThe safety of all guests, exhibitors and staff, as well as the security of the artworks, is our utmost priority,\u201d the organization said. \u201cAdditional security personnel have been deployed to patrol the perimeter of the fair 24 hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tIn the wake of the demonstrations, the Foreign Ministry postponed \u201cPassages \u2014 Pas sages,\u201d an exhibition coproduced by Thierry Lemaire and Harry Nuriev, and several other events were canceled, including the opening cocktail for an art exhibition at Guerlain\u2019s flagship on the Avenue des Champs-Elys\u00e9es that is tied to the centenary of its Shalimar fragrance.<\/p>\n
\n\tOthers were maintained, including a dinner at the Peninsula hotel on Wednesday celebrating Champagne house Perrier-Jou\u00ebt\u2019s collaboration with designer Iris van Herpen.<\/p>\n
