/>

New images have shown the inside of Osney Power Station which has been at the centre of a major regeneration that has seen it turned into a cutting-edge centre for executive education.

The new Global Leadership Centre (GLC), part of the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, sits inside the historic building which supplied electricity to Oxford from 1892 until its closure in 1968.

The centre, designed by John McAslan + Partners, offers a purpose-built, immersive environment for executive education.

Professor Mette Morsing, dean of Oxford Saïd, said: “We are delighted to be able to share this wonderful building with the world and very excited by the opportunities it opens up.

“Leadership is a learning experience and the GLC is the perfect location for leaders to come and stay and learn, away from their busy roles, and work with Oxford professors, experts and each other to find the next steps, be challenged, identify the optimum strategy, and the most effective way forward for themselves and for their organisations.

“In this our 30th anniversary year, we are extremely pleased to welcome the future of executive education.”

Global leadership centre at Oxford’s historic Osney Power Station (Image: Hufton+Crow)

After the old power station was decommissioned, the University of Oxford repurposed the building for various uses, including as a research laboratory for the Department of Engineering.

The new GLC now represents the latest chapter in the building’s history, blending its industrial heritage with contemporary educational needs.

The centre includes 120 bedrooms, teaching and meeting spaces, a dining room, and wellbeing facilities such as a gym and a terrace overlooking the River Thames.

The centre’s design is rooted in adaptive reuse, preserving the identity of the historic site while meeting modern demands.

Global leadership centre at Oxford’s historic Osney Power Station (Image: Hufton+Crow)

John McAslan, founder and executive chairman of John McAslan + Partners, said: “Our approach to transforming the redundant power station into the Global Leadership Centre for the University of Oxford has been to harness the existing building’s distinctive characteristics.

“Central to this is the retention and expression of its powerful internal volume as an agora – a collegiate quad for interaction and the exchange of ideas – while the residential accommodation on the upper floors celebrates the surrounding landscape and strengthens the building’s relationship with its setting.”

The former turbine hall has been reimagined as a triple-height agora, serving as the main entrance and social heart of the centre.

Original features such as steel trusses, exposed brickwork, and the gantry crane remain in place.

Modern additions include timber, glass, and steel elements that form bridges, balconies, and staircases to encourage movement and interaction.

Natural light now fills the space through a landscaped courtyard.

Sarah Kirby, architect, director, and project lead at John McAslan + Partners, said: “More than the restoration of a historic structure or the creation of a new educational facility, the Global Leadership Centre is a compelling example of regenerative architecture: a project that conserves embodied resources, strengthens community identity and demonstrates that the future of our cities will increasingly depend not on what we build anew, but on how imaginatively we reinvent the buildings we already have.”

The design team prioritised environmental responsibility throughout the project.

Global leadership centre at Oxford’s historic Osney Power Station (Image: Hufton+Crow)

Retaining the original structure helped preserve embodied carbon and reduce the environmental impact compared to demolition and new construction.

The building incorporates Passivhaus principles for improved thermal performance, insulation, and airtightness.

Louise Croft, managing director of executive education at Saïd Business School, said: “Our amazing new Global Leadership Centre is a perfect home for transformational executive development for the world’s leaders and leading organisations.

“It is a space which encourages conversation, learning, and reflection.

“The GLC has been carefully designed to support today’s executives as they face unprecedented change and complexity.”

The GLC is located on Arthur Street, just a five-minute walk from Oxford station and the Saïd Business School Park End Street campus.

It is designed to serve as a landmark destination for executive education in the heart of Oxford.

#Photos #show #70m #Global #Leadership #Centre #Osney #Power #Station

New images have shown the inside
