\n Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service took a call at 2.18pm for the incident at Appleford Sidings, Sutton Courtney, in Abingdon.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u00a0Four appliances from Didcot, Abingdon, Rewley Road and the Slade Fire stations responded to tackle a “significant fire in a pile of waste” on September 14.\n<\/p>\n
\n The crews attended the blaze at FCC Sutton Courtenay landfill site near Abingdon but told nearby residents to not be “alarmed” and they were not issuing any “advice to keep windows and doors closed”.\n<\/p>\n
\n Now, almost one week later, residents are still experiencing a high amount of smoke in the air as well as a persistent smell.\n<\/p>\n
\n Residents are claiming the fire is entering homes even with windows and doors closed, and asthmatics and children are severely impacted by the smoke.\n<\/p>\n
\n One resident said: “It it is really hard to believe that the burning of organic material for over a week is not releasing harmful toxins and particulates.”\n<\/p>\n
\n District and county councillor Ian Snowdon said: “Residents should not simply be expected to endure this level of smoke and odour for days on end.\n<\/p>\n
\n “I will be asking what enforcement action can be taken.”\n<\/p>\n

\n It comes just two years after the smell coming from the FCC Environmental landfill sparked an investigation, following 130 complaints and the Environment Agency classifying it as a ‘significant odour incident’\n<\/p>\n
\n MP for Didcot and Wantage, Olly Glover, recently wrote to the management company of the landfill site between Appleford and Sutton Courtenay after a ‘very significant increase’ in complaints from locals about the odour coming from the facility.\n<\/p>\n
\n In his letter to the company, Mr Glover said: “The smell has been noticeable for many weeks now, and as you will know, this is not a new issue.\n<\/p>\n
\n “At the time, residents were assured that measures were being taken to address the problem, including the removal and management of leachate, engineered capping, and increased monitoring, both on and off site.\n<\/p>\n
\n “It is therefore extremely concerning that, two years later, residents are once again reporting overwhelming odours.”\n<\/p>\n
\n In a joint statement, The Environment Agency, FCC Environment and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We continue to monitor the situation closely and are working together to bring the incident to a conclusion as safely and efficiently as possible.\n<\/p>\n
\n “While smoke remains visible in the area, the general advice is to avoid prolonged exposure where possible and to keep windows and doors closed if smoke is affecting your immediate location.”\n<\/p>\n
