\n West Oxfordshire District Council has rejected claims by councillor Liam Walker that the reason for decline in its garden waste licences is due to rising costs.\n<\/p>\n
\n In a social media post Councillor Liam Walker said: “For about three years now we\u2019ve been warning the Lib Dem administration at West Oxfordshire District Council that if they keep hiking up the cost of a garden waste licence, fewer and fewer residents will choose to buy one.\n<\/p>\n
\n “But, in the usual Lib Dem style, they thought they knew best and kept putting the price up.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Now the Quarter 1 figures have been published and already showing the consequences, with garden waste income a whopping \u00a3169,000 behind target.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Residents are being asked to pay more, while the council is bringing in significantly less income than it expected.\n<\/p>\n
\n “We warned them. They ignored us. And now the figures are speaking for themselves.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Yet more proof that when it comes to managing council finances and delivering services, they simply don\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Some on social media agreed with him calling the system “pointless” and the price “unreasonable”, telling other just to “chuck it in the black bin”.\n<\/p>\n

\n But now a West Oxfordshire District Council spokesperson has confirmed that the council had frozen the cost of the Garden Waste collection last year, confirming it is still one of the cheapest garden waste services in Oxfordshire.\n<\/p>\n
\n “This service is currently not ‘over budget’, does not have ‘higher costs’ and\u00a0will not ‘impact future services’ as suggested in this post.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Whilst the exceptionally dry weather may have contributed to lower demand, the service has achieved 90 per cent of the annual budget and remains forecast to make a positive net contribution to Council services of \u00a3300,000.\n<\/p>\n
\n “The Council has a strong track record for managing its finances over recent years.\n<\/p>\n
\n “In the last two years we have come in under budget, enabling us to reinvest in local services and initiatives. ”\n<\/p>\n
\n The spokesperson actually confirmed the Quarter 1 report indicated an overall underspend of \u00a3271,000.\n<\/p>\n
\n The garden-waste subscriptions for West Oxfordshire District Council currently sits at \u00a352.50 per bin, with collections fortnightly.\n<\/p>\n
\n While the average annual garden-waste subscription sits at \u00a341.45 per bin across the UK, West Oxfordshire District Council is still the cheapest in the county.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cherwell District Council currently charges \u00a359 per bin, South Oxfordshire District Council and Vale of White Horse District Council charges \u00a378 for garden waste, and Oxford City Council charges \u00a398.70 for garden-waste collections per bin.\n<\/p>\n
